We’re so excited to announce that our scientific paper we submitted to the Elsevier Procedia Computer Science – EuroHPC User Days 2025 Book of Proceedings, was published during the EuroHPC User Days in October last year in Copenhagen and is now live, highlighting the extensive R&D work we have done over the last couple of years on improving our automatic field boundary delineation model, moving from CNN to transformer model and ability to run model training on the fifth most powerful supercomputer in the world, LUMI, which was made significant difference to our output and accuracy. 

This work was made possible not only with support from the EuroHPC, LUMI but also with Sigma2 AS – Norway’s national research infrastructure partner that facilitates access to LUMI and advanced HPC resources. Thanks to their support and the broader HPC ecosystem, we’ve accelerated training of our deep neural network and scaled our research to real-world impact.

Using super-high resolution Sentinel-2 at 1 meter per pixel (with spectral 10 bands) and over 5.5 million manually delineated hectares of training data from over 31 countries, our model was able to:

✅ Automatically detect field boundaries in-season (seeded/non-seeded acres) prior to 15% green leaf canopy cover (~20-25 days after planting)
✅ Achieved increased IoU accuracy by ~4.2% to current IoU of 0.94+
✅ Improve accuracy on detection of crop homogenous zones by over 15 % vs. existing Cadastral data
✅ Cut processing time from weeks to days.

Access to LUMI’s high-performance GPUs – supported through Sigma2’s infrastructure and grant allocations – has been a game-changer for us, enabling bigger models, faster training, and more robust results.

This research marks a significant step toward faster, more accurate, and affordable digitization of agriculture, helping farmers, agribusinesses, and policymakers optimize and automate workflows, analytics, reducing manual labor and administrative costs, penalties, verification errors across the value chain.
