Sustainability is a fundamental requirement to the agricultural industry. Crop and livestock production must not just use natural resources, but replenish those resources through the right farm management practices.

The positive DigiFarm Sustainability Index (DFSI) value indicates that the farming operations in the field consistently augment field productivity, ensure sustainable crop production, and higher land value.

Negative DFSI values show gradual and consistent reduction in field productivity. Fields usually use more plant available nutrients from the soil than come back with fertilizers, so they will not meet the definition of sustainable crop production. This increases agronomic and financial risks, and reduces the land value.

Field boundaries are served as Geojson via API for a given point, bbox or field id. Field id can be obtained from a low resolution API endpoint (that allows to show low res polygons on the map for the user to select the field and get a high res boundary).

Why does agriculture need sustainability index?

Sustainability is a fundamental requirement to the agricultural industry. Crop and livestock production must not just use the natural resources, but replenish those resources through the right farm management practices.

What about global, regional, or farm-specific field sustainability ranking?

Every agricultural field on Earth can be ranked for the sustainability of crop production. The ranking can be done for various periods of time, e.g. 3 years, 10 years, 20 years, or for the full available field history from satellite imagery (since 1984).

How long does it take for the sustainability index to be processed after a query?

Currently the API live sustainability index processing feature is not yet active (release planned for Q4 2023), so the data will be pre-processed for the area of interest and then made available through API queries. The pre-processing timeline for the whole AOI depends on the size of the area and current release stage in our coverage but usually takes around a week.
